Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada, but was raised in the US. She has worked as an editor since the year 1995. She founded Feminist Frequency a website that includes videos and comments on portrayals of women in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American blogger and media critic who has been awarded awards for her work, is a feminist blogger. Feminist Frequency examines the way women are represented in the popular media. Alongside working to bring awareness to sexual harassment and attack on women and others of minority groups in the online world, she is committed to breaking down stereotypes that are prevalent in pop culture. Sarkeesian holds a bachelor's degree in the fields of social thought and political science from York University. She is also an internationally acclaimed public speaker. Sarkeesian delivered speeches to the TEDxWomen XOXO Fest and United Nations Broadband Working Group. From an early age she was intrigued by issues of gender identity and feminist thought. When she was still in school, in 2009 she started her Feminist Frequency Website. The site was created by a woman in her early 20s who wanted to create the series of videos on the internet which would explore how gender is represented in video games. But, she was the victim of online harassment. This attack was not enough to deter her. Instead, it increased her importance as a feminist and media critic. The award-winning journalist has received numerous accolades for her numerous notable contributions to the field of feminism. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award award-winning media journalist. She also serves as the director and founder of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit group that focuses on pop-culture representations of females.
